We all want to be liked and accepted by those around you, but sometimes worrying about what others think about us can get in the way of our own happiness. The stress and the anxiety that result from this are absolutely unnecessary, and even when it might be easier said than done, we need to stop giving so much thought to other’s opinions. This way, we will be able to focus on ourselves, putting our time and energy into our personal growth, achieving our goals, and feeling happier and healthier than ever.
- Understand why you worry so much. The very first step we need to take so that we can stop worrying about what others think about us is understanding why their opinion matters in the first place. Most of the times, we are taught to seek for approval and validation, whether from our parents, our teachers, or any other figures of authority. However, when it comes to fulfilling our dreams, the only approval we need is our own.
- Remember that others’ opinion is not your business. Once we have learned that we have been conditioned to seek others’ approval, we need to remember that their opinion is not our business. People will always have an opinion about others, and we cannot change that. What we can change, though, is the importance that we give to such opinions.
- Try to focus on something positive instead. When we worry about what other people think about us, the stress and anxiety that it gives us represent energy we are wasting. Instead of trying to be liked and approved by others, we should try to focus that energy on something positive. Working on something we love and putting all our mind and heart into it will keep us from focusing on negative thoughts we may have.
- Don’t forget about accepting and loving yourself. One of the reasons we might worry about what others think about us is because we don’t feel confident about ourselves. By practicing self-love and self-acceptance, we will learn to feel more confident about ourselves, about where we are in life, and eventually stop worrying about what others think about us. Accepting and loving who we are will also lead us to living a happier, healthier, and more fulfilling life.
“Believe in yourself and there will come a day
when others will have no choice
but to believe with you.”
