One of the keys to being a better Global Citizen is becoming aware that our natural resources are limited and we have to do our part to preserve them. The following five ideas are simple strategies anyone can adopt today to reduce waste and contribute to taking care of our planet.
Whenever it makes sense, buy used items. From clothing to electronics and books, there are many options to find second-hand goods that are still in great condition.
Local markets and yard sales are two places where you can usually get good deals on used items. However, technology has expanded the horizons of savvy shoppers (and sellers), so it’s a good idea to browse through your community’s online classified ads and Facebook pages if you’re planning to make a purchase.
Look for Products that Use Less Packaging
The idea that “less is more” is helpful in more than one way. Preferring products with simple packaging not only helps you save money, but it also reduces waste and optimizes resources.
In the cases where you can’t avoid buying packaged products, recycle the packaging, or donate it to institutions that may use it. For example, nurseries and schools use egg cartons for craft projects.
Favor Reusable Items
In previous posts, we have talked about the benefits of mindfulness, and part of its beauty is that it can be applied to anything, including the items you purchase. Be mindful of your shopping decisions and identify opportunities to replace disposable items with reusable ones. For example:
- Glass jars and bottles
- Eating utensils
- Scrap paper (use it to make notes before recycling it)
This is a good time to change our relationship with the objects that surround us. Instead of throwing things away as soon as they stop working properly, take the time to learn how to repair them. This approach results in significant savings and it’s also a great way of acquiring useful skills that can even turn into a new hobby.
Donating what you don’t need anymore keeps the reusing cycle in motion. Take stock of the things you own and decide which can be donated. Some of the items that only take up space in your home can make a big difference for someone else! Some examples include:
